REFOCUSING THE NIGERIAN LIBRARIES IN THE NEW INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY AGE IN ORDER TO MEET THE PRESENT ECONOMIC CHALLENGES.

The paper x-rays the concept and place of information technologies in the development of libraries in the face of evolving information and knowledge age and the need to refocus libraries in the new information and communication technology age in order to meet the present economic challenges. The paper emphasized that libraries are chief sources of information to the citizenry and must embrace information technologies to be relevant in this information age. It traced the origin of information technologies, components of ICTs in use in libraries, major challenges in the use of ICT in libraries as well as impact of information technology in libraries. The paper concludes that the development of information and communication technology have made significant impact in all aspects of human life and emphasized that the world has become a global village as a result of the emergence of ICT and recommends that librarian and information professionals must prepare themselves to fully embrace information technologies usage in order to impact positively on the economy.KEYWORDS: Librarians, Information, Information professionals, Information technologies, Nigerian Libraries, Knowledge age
