THE ROLE OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT) IN HUMAN CAPITAL DEVELOPMENT OF LIBRARY PROFESSIONALS.
This paper x-rays the roles of Information and Communication Technology in
the human capital development of library professionals. The paper emphasized
that ICT plays important roles in the training and development of library
professionals, the impact of training on their job performance and noted that
Information technology is rapidly changing the whole world, creating new
challenges and opportunities and that library and information (LIS) profession
is one of the most challenging professions in the knowledge society, combining
expertise in information management with the Information and
Communications Technology (ICT) competencies. The paper further emphasized
that ICT has tremendous impact on library operations, resources, services, staff
and users and as a result, libraries, librarians, library schools are confronting
challenging dynamic technological environments which demand the extensive
and effective utilization of ICT in order to survive and meet the changing
complex information needs of user communities. The paper therefore call for an
intensive training and retraining of library professionals on Information and
Communication Technology competencies in order to be relevant in this present
information age.
