Abstract / Description
This study examined the impact of organizational communication on industrial relations in Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-uku. The specific objectives adopted are to assess the impact of poor organizational communication on employee turnover, examine the effects of poor communication on industrial litigation, and ascertain the effects of poor communication on the academic calendar of tertiary educational institutions. A structured questionnaire based on a 4-point likert scale was used to collect primary data from 264 respondents and data was analyzed using descriptive statistical tools. The study is framed within system theory, which attempts to view the school as a unified purposeful organization or a system composed of interrelated parts, insinuating that the activity of any part of the system has a direct bearing on every segment of the educational system. Findings indicate that poor communication can significantly contribute to employee turnover, promote conflict and also contribute to disruption in academic calendar of higher education institutions. Recommendations include making arrangement for open forums, where management engages directly with labour unions quarterly or every semester, involvement of union representatives in decision-making processes regarding institutional policies, ensure sufficient, honest, and documented communication about changes and financial developments to curb rumours and misunderstandings among others.
